One of South Korea’s best known fashion designers has died today at the age of 74.
Andre Kim died on Thursday at Seoul National University Hospital. He had been at the hospital several weeks already, suffering from pneumonia, according to hospital official Oh DongSeo.
Kim was, unarguably, one of the countries most iconic designers. His designs were elaborate, and sometimes futuristic, while his fashion shows were full of glitz and glamor and were also famous for featuring many top celebrities. His work was exhibited in international shows, ranging from cities such as Paris and Sydney. He finished a show just this year in Beijing.
He was born not Andre Kim, but Kim BongNam, the son of a farming family. He launched his fashion career in 1962 while South Korea was still recovering from the disasters of the Korean War. He later went on to open Salon Andre in Central Seoul, and became South Korea’s first male designer. He became famous not only for his designs but also his own distinctive style. He was always seen by the public eye in all white clothes and heavy black eyeliner.
Rest in peace, Andre Kim. You will be missed!
