EPISODES 13 and 14 REVIEW...
by drama(Ma)Tiger

One of the most interesting things about Pinocchio remains the way in which the story weaves together. The further in we get, the more all those coincidental factors don’t seem as coincidental as they initially seemed. The drama on the whole manages to tell a story in three parts: The episodic nature, the interwoven, and the overarching. I’m finding the the former two parts make it more difficult to look at the weekly episodes on an individual basis; they tie together much nicely if they’re looked at together.

It’s easy to watch the Wednesday episode and speculate about tones, themes, thoughts and feelings that could crop up in the next. But it’s hard to be right about them, especially when they’re told in such a seamless manner and thematically thread together to form an interesting balance. Last week, we were given something very, very emotionally heavy. This week gave us two other sides: The lighthearted to soothe the burn, and an ever-important progression of the overarching plot. It remains compelling and laced with a score of nuances that really serve to prove our writer’s attention to detail.

But enough with the waxing potential when there’s a lot within these two episodes that I’ve been thinking about. A lot. Shall we?

In terms of some of the smaller themes we got to see, I’m enjoying Yoo Rae’s fledgling interest in Dal Po/Ha Myung. Throughout both episodes, we see her taking an interest in him as something more than a coworker, even putting her oppa aside (which I’m sure Heechul himself must totally be devastated by, obviously) for the cause. It’s cute to see her try to flirt and put herself out there, and even when she shows hints of jealousy towards In Ha, there isn’t malice. It feels whimsical and childlike, as if she really doesn’t know how to approach this, thanks to her past.

Granted, the fact that she’s also oblivious to Dal Po’s feelings for In Ha until it’s directly noted and the fact that she thinks he’s hung up on her just adds to how amusing it is. I’m wondering what will happen as she really starts to see how deep In Ha and Dal Po’s feelings run; will she just concede quietly and go back to her oppa, or will she put her sasaeng history to use as she has before? I’m hoping for an in-between, since Yoo Rae has shown that she can learn from her experiences. It’s a slow burn with the reporter job, but she’s been finding a balance of being totally over-the-top and knowing when to use her past alongside seeing just how important so many other factors are in reporting the news. Even though she still seems to pout when Cap Hwang hands off a meaty project to Dal Po, she also comes to understand the reasoning behind it later on, and is usually considerate of it afterwards. It’s growth, and it’s definite change. I’ll admit though, I wish it was more. Even though Yoo Rae is part of our main cast, I still don’t feel like she has nearly as much relevance as she could, and while I wouldn’t say the potential is wasted when we’ve got a ways to go… it would have been nice to see her more fleshed out.

But as we reach that point, it’s time to get into some of the more detailed themes of this week’s episodes: family. There was one thing that was made so clear, and that’s the fact that there are no clear lines in the sand when it comes to Dal Po’s family. The fact that grandpa and dad showed up at all was amazing; rather than wallowing in the pain of losing his “eldest son,” he just refused to accept it. He wasn’t dissolving the adoption, and you’re damn right he was going to walk right into that house and make sure everything met his standards. If Dal Po isn’t going to come home, then he damn well better be taking care of himself in his new one. Add this in with the conversation with dad calling himself Dal Po’s hyung… how perfect was that? There was no reason he absolutely needed to say that, and it was obvious was a confusing statement it was to an outsider. But he did it anyway. Following that up with later wearing one of Dal Po’s old shirts and it’s like like “aww…”

That’s not all though, of course. There’s the fact that when Dal Po was told pretty plainly that if he took another step, they wouldn’t come back to visit—sure enough, he didn’t take another step. This family is always on that boy’s mind; they may not be related by blood, and the situation may be endlessly complicated, but Dal Po loves them dearly. Why else would he be stealing their favorite snacks in an uninhibited, drunken stupor? Hilarious as the return of his finger guns was, it gave a little pang in my heart, because in those moments, he completely let go. That is someone who loves his adoptive family dearly. That’s someone who embraced them so wholly that when he lets his walls down, they’re still on the forefront of his mind. Even when he’s worried about Jae Myung and even when he feels guilty, it’s an all-encompassing guilt.

Dal Po is trying to draw a line that never needs to be there. Which is what makes Grandpa’s visit to Jae Myung one of the single best parts of this week’s episodes. He labeled his relation as family—therefore accepting Jae Myung into their family unit. And even knowing the terrible things he did, Grandpa could see right up front that despite their differences in every regard, they were both truly brothers and good people at their core. Yes, Jae Myung made mistakes, huge ones from an emotional snap. Obviously, he needs to pay the price for his deeds, and his actions should never be condoned or justified in any way. But he’s also the personification of the notion that good people can do terrible, terrible things when their emotional threads have been compromised. Grandpa sees through this, and rather than look at Jae Myung as someone who was taking a son from him, he embraced it instead. He said “hey, let me catch you up on what your brother’s life was for 13 years—you may not have seen him grow up, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know of it all.” This is such a beautiful and heartfelt sentiment, and it really proves just how loved Dal Po is.

Now, when it comes to Dal Po and In Ha, it seems strange from an outside perspective that they haven’t just resolved things and moved on. They’re acting on amiable terms, but still not getting back together. Others may call that pointless or something to drag out the plot, but I’ve found it’s something I really love. Nothing has been resolved yet, and even though they’re really and truly seeking to accomplish the very same things to the point of working together closely (despite their working for different networks), they’re still a lot happening. As much as it’s painful for them both, it’s probably the smartest decision they can make.

Dal Po isn’t mentally in a place where he should be in a relationship. He’s focused on work, on revealing so many truths and seeking a certain brand of retribution (thankfully not a taste of Song Cha Ok’s medicine…) that it wouldn’t be healthy. It’s not exactly about Song Cha Ok herself anymore, but about Dal Po coming to terms with things. He has to accept who he is in the present, and that’s something he’s clearly reluctant to do. He’s outed himself as Ki Ha Myung, he’s tried to insist that people use that name, and he’s tried to push away the adopted family. He’s done everything he can to try and “embrace” (a term I use lightly, it’s more like shouldering burdens) his past and his life openly.

Even as he does that though, it fails. He still answers to Dal Po, he stills runs to In Ha’s aid when she’s in danger. He still thinks of his family and misses them, and he still gives her subtle looks of love in those quiet moments—like when In Ha was fixing the hood of his coat. And then, of course, there was Beom Jo’s attempt to confess, which had Dal Po running to the scene… followed by him wallowing and getting drunk. Which ended in that ever-important “dream” where he tells her that he can’t be with her, but that she can’t move on. He doesn’t want to and isn’t letting go, and even if he believes that he only shared that in a dream, he communicated to her one of his deepest worries—losing her.

His love for her is so strong, and he fears that loss because of how strongly those sentiments run. All the same, he doesn’t want to hold on to her tightly when it could just hurt both of them. Until he can accept the fact that Dal Po and Ha Myung are not two separate people, with separate lives and histories, and until he can accept himself as the whole, it’s better that they’re not tied to the relationship. This is an issue he has with himself, and one he needs to resolve in his own heart and mind; In Ha understands and accepts this. There isn’t hesitation in that, and she didn’t need his feverish confession to know it, either.

Their relationship keeps a level of understanding that’s off the charts. Yoo Rae taking notice of how in sync they are with one another only further proves that… not to mention even old friends could see their chemistry… But that’s what makes them the darling couple, right?

It’s also what makes Beom Jo’s advances wholly annoying, though. He’s the sort of character I’ve come to be very hot-and-cold with for too many reason. One one hand, he generally means well, he ultimately wants the right things, and he’s learning to grow up. On the other, he can be very childish and the fact that he wasted absolutely no time trying to win In Ha over after learning of her split with Dal Po just erased a lot of my sympathy for him. Because not only did he do that with a lot of persistence, he held a conversation with her that was being shared without her consent (even if it was just to Dal Po) and then wanted her to feel guilty? As if she should feel bad in any way for being steadfast in her feelings and knowing that nothing is going to change the fact that she wants nothing more than just a friend/colleague relationship with Beom Jo. That didn’t read as endearing and sheltered boy growing up, and it didn’t read as someone being assertive in attaining anything good. It read as a guy who got rejected and refuses to accept it, even knowing her heart lies somewhere else.

It’s not an endearing trait in a real man who cries “friendzone!!” on the internet, and it’s not endearing in a fictional chaebol, even if he does have his fair share of looks and charm in his own right. I don’t like that, and it’s one of the few things that steers a little too far into my distaste for pushy and entitled second leads.

It doesn’t change the fact that I felt bad when his worldview with regards to his mother were shattered completely. And I’m glad that despite the shitty way he’s holding this situation with In Ha rather grossly over Dal Po’s head, that they do have a lot of common ground. They have experiences that are shared in sentiment and when it comes to the news, they both want to uncover truths that tie their fates together. I’m glad that even with all the tensions, Dal Po offered to drive when he knew Beom Jo wasn’t in a position to do so. They’re both good people who want the right things, and honestly? They could use each other as friends in a pretty serious way.

All of this leads the charge into what seems to be the final portion of the overarching plot. And boy, am I ever excited about it. I want to wait to see how it unfolds a little more before I really start to pick apart the details and nuances, but they’re building. I knew from the get-go that there had to be more to Beom Jo’s mom—there was no way our team was going to waste Kim Hae Sook on a doting chaebol mom.

But in an instant, she exceeds expectations in being totally ruthless. Now we know that she orchestrated shifting the focus of the incident 13 years ago to Dal Po’s dad. We know she’s doing that again, and we know that she’s none too pleased with the fact that Dal Po is now making her son all too acutely aware of her wrongdoings. Only time will tell what the depths of that story really are, and I’m sure they’re not nearly as simple as her being a really villain.

What I’m curious for is Song Cha Ok. What is her relationship exactly that she can’t refuse this? After seeing how everything played out 13 years ago and how all the major players have stepped forward and are fully aware of her wrongdoings (whether or not she admits them)…

And then she does the same thing again, using the impact of the news to unfairly incriminate Chan Soo. She’s backing this decision with logic, but how much of this logic is hers? Is there any conscience to it at all, or is she doing it because of that obligation? Her nature makes her more of a wild card than she seems, and the fact that so much has come to light and put her in a dicey position makes me wonder just what will happen next.

Dal Po has already challenged her once (which again, I’m thankful for. Bless In Ha for being his conscience and without words reminding him that he has to reveal the truth and not just sink as low as her mom did), and now he looks to be challenging her again. I love this, because the stakes are different now. While she’s willing to use MSC as Beom Jo’s mom wants… they’re not going to get everyone to follow along. We already have MSC staff who are clued in to the truth…

And we have YGN. Cap Hwang has learned from his mistakes, and the fact that he’s openly talking to Dal Po about the similarities and even owning up to all of his past errors means that the tables are bound to turn. They’re coming up on an advantage here, and I think it’s going to lead them to all the truths that have had impact on all of their lives for over a decade.

Wrapping up, what’s left to say is that it’s the smaller things rather than the larger that keep me invested in this drama. I can admit that the overarching plot is not as compelling to me as it could be; I love it, but I think others have done better in building a story. But Pinocchio excels at its characters. They breathe life into the story, and it’s all of their interactions, quirks and mannerisms that make me want to know what comes next. I want to know what will lead them to their happy endings; I’ve been laughing and crying with them…

They feel more real than the story itself, but rather than it being a detriment, it makes the story all the more lovable. Because I want things for them, I want the twists and truths, and I want the resolutions so their sake, rather than for the sake of just being gripped to the plot itself. For a person who is driven more by characters, this is great. Amazing. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next.

I love how InHa has been his rock, the love of his life, his conscience and an understanding friend who puts him first as he would himself to her. What a love story.
