It’s also what makes Beom Jo’s advances wholly annoying, though. He’s the sort of character I’ve come to be very hot-and-cold with for too many reason. One one hand, he generally means well, he ultimately wants the right things, and he’s learning to grow up. On the other, he can be very childish and the fact that he wasted absolutely no time trying to win In Ha over after learning of her split with Dal Po just erased a lot of my sympathy for him. Because not only did he do that with a lot of persistence, he held a conversation with her that was being shared without her consent (even if it was just to Dal Po) and then wanted her to feel guilty? As if she should feel bad in any way for being steadfast in her feelings and knowing that nothing is going to change the fact that she wants nothing more than just a friend/colleague relationship with Beom Jo. That didn’t read as endearing and sheltered boy growing up, and it didn’t read as someone being assertive in attaining anything good. It read as a guy who got rejected and refuses to accept it, even knowing her heart lies somewhere else.
It’s not an endearing trait in a real man who cries “friendzone!!” on the internet, and it’s not endearing in a fictional chaebol, even if he does have his fair share of looks and charm in his own right. I don’t like that, and it’s one of the few things that steers a little too far into my distaste for pushy and entitled second leads.
It doesn’t change the fact that I felt bad when his worldview with regards to his mother were shattered completely. And I’m glad that despite the shitty way he’s holding this situation with In Ha rather grossly over Dal Po’s head, that they do have a lot of common ground. They have experiences that are shared in sentiment and when it comes to the news, they both want to uncover truths that tie their fates together. I’m glad that even with all the tensions, Dal Po offered to drive when he knew Beom Jo wasn’t in a position to do so. They’re both good people who want the right things, and honestly? They could use each other as friends in a pretty serious way.
All of this leads the charge into what seems to be the final portion of the overarching plot. And boy, am I ever excited about it. I want to wait to see how it unfolds a little more before I really start to pick apart the details and nuances, but they’re building. I knew from the get-go that there had to be more to Beom Jo’s mom—there was no way our team was going to waste Kim Hae Sook on a doting chaebol mom.
But in an instant, she exceeds expectations in being totally ruthless. Now we know that she orchestrated shifting the focus of the incident 13 years ago to Dal Po’s dad. We know she’s doing that again, and we know that she’s none too pleased with the fact that Dal Po is now making her son all too acutely aware of her wrongdoings. Only time will tell what the depths of that story really are, and I’m sure they’re not nearly as simple as her being a really villain.
What I’m curious for is Song Cha Ok. What is her relationship exactly that she can’t refuse this? After seeing how everything played out 13 years ago and how all the major players have stepped forward and are fully aware of her wrongdoings (whether or not she admits them)…
And then she does the same thing again, using the impact of the news to unfairly incriminate Chan Soo. She’s backing this decision with logic, but how much of this logic is hers? Is there any conscience to it at all, or is she doing it because of that obligation? Her nature makes her more of a wild card than she seems, and the fact that so much has come to light and put her in a dicey position makes me wonder just what will happen next.
Dal Po has already challenged her once (which again, I’m thankful for. Bless In Ha for being his conscience and without words reminding him that he has to reveal the truth and not just sink as low as her mom did), and now he looks to be challenging her again. I love this, because the stakes are different now. While she’s willing to use MSC as Beom Jo’s mom wants… they’re not going to get everyone to follow along. We already have MSC staff who are clued in to the truth…
And we have YGN. Cap Hwang has learned from his mistakes, and the fact that he’s openly talking to Dal Po about the similarities and even owning up to all of his past errors means that the tables are bound to turn. They’re coming up on an advantage here, and I think it’s going to lead them to all the truths that have had impact on all of their lives for over a decade.
Wrapping up, what’s left to say is that it’s the smaller things rather than the larger that keep me invested in this drama. I can admit that the overarching plot is not as compelling to me as it could be; I love it, but I think others have done better in building a story. But Pinocchio excels at its characters. They breathe life into the story, and it’s all of their interactions, quirks and mannerisms that make me want to know what comes next. I want to know what will lead them to their happy endings; I’ve been laughing and crying with them…
They feel more real than the story itself, but rather than it being a detriment, it makes the story all the more lovable. Because I want things for them, I want the twists and truths, and I want the resolutions so their sake, rather than for the sake of just being gripped to the plot itself. For a person who is driven more by characters, this is great. Amazing. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next.
