Chapter 20
After he and Eun Jung were properly dressed; Prince JiangSu called for their attendants to prepare the royal carriages, which would be used to transport them to the Gyotaejeon. Since Eun Jung had been on her feet for nearly the entire morning; she readily welcomed the idea of not having to go to the Queen’s residence by foot. While they waited in their bedroom for the royal carriages to arrive, Prince JiangSu took the opportunity, to instruct several of the maids to tend to Eun Jung’s injuries. Looking down at her newly applied bandages; Eun Jung said to Prince JiangSu, “They just did that a little while ago. I don’t think it’s time to reapply the ointment yet.” As he took a seat by Eun Jung at the dining table, Prince JiangSu replied, “I know that. But I’m not sure how long we’ll be at the Gyotaejeon today. So I’d prefer that your injuries get tended to earlier rather than later.” Once the maids had completed their assigned task; Prince JiangSu excused them from the room, and proceeded to examine the new bandages around Eun Jung’s ankles.
Delighted by her husband’s unwavering concern over her well-being; Eun Jung smiled happily, and took a hold of Prince JiangSu’s arm before advancing closer to gently plant a lingering kiss on his cheek. Since he had always been the person to initiate the intimacy within their relationship; Prince JiangSu found himself slightly taken aback by Eun Jung’s sudden display of affection, and asked, “What was that for?” Upon hearing Prince JiangSu’s inquiry, Eun Jung shrugged her shoulders, and focused on his gaze before replying, “No reason. I just felt like kissing my husband. Unlike you, I don’t sit around coming up with methods to cheat kisses from unsuspecting people.” Realizing that Eun Jung was referring to the pineapple cream puff incident; Prince JiangSu leaned in closer to her, and whispered into her ear, “Even though it was a swindled kiss, I don’t recall having received any complaints from you at the time.”
Having always been exceedingly sensitive, to any type of contact to her ears; Eun Jung immediately recoiled and pushed Prince JiangSu away before ordering, “Stop that.” Despite wanting to confirm his inkling about Eun Jung’s aversion to having her ears touched; Prince JiangSu found that he would be unable to do so, when one of the attendants announced that the royal carriages were ready. Coming upon the perfect excuse, to escape from the potentially embarrassing situation; Eun Jung presented Prince JiangSu with her hand and asked, “Aren’t you going to help me out to the carriage?” Taking note of her apparent attempt to circumvent having to explain herself; Prince JiangSu reached out to hold Eun Jung’s hand, and interlocked their fingers before replying, “Don’t think that you’re off the hook. We’ll pick up right where we left off, later tonight.” With a visible pout on her face, Eun Jung sighed heavily before she proceeded to pull on Prince JiangSu’s hand to usher him forward.
Upon arriving at the outer courtyard of the Gyotaejeon, Prince JiangSu alighted from his carriage, and quickly made his way over to Eun Jung to help her down. Concerned that the unsteady ride had caused her discomfort; Prince JiangSu eyed Eun Jung from head to toe before asking, “Are you feeling okay? How are your injuries?” Before any of his inquiries could be answered; Prince JiangSu’s attention was suddenly diverted, when he heard the King teasingly ask the Queen, “My dear wife, can you remember, which of my royal son’s was adamant about not wanting an arranged marriage?” Prince JiangSu observed his royal mother hide her smile, with a thin silk handkerchief, before she replied, “I do recall, that it was our very own, Crowned Prince JiangSu. But seeing him today, you would have guessed that he picked out this wife on his own.” Realizing that they were in the presence of the King and Queen; Prince JiangSu, Eun Jung and all their servants quickly made their formal bows, and only stood up after the King had permitted them to do so.
As he and Eun Jung made their way towards the pagoda, where the King and Queen sat, Prince JiangSu asked, “May I inquire, as to the reason for my royal parents’ good spirits?” Puzzled by Prince JiangSu’s question; the Queen focused her attention on Eun Jung’s face before asking, “Princess Soo Jin, did you not tell your husband that today is your birthday?” Taken completely off guard by the Queen’s question, Eun Jung forced a smile before replying, “To tell you the truth, I didn’t mention it because I didn’t even realize that today was my birthday.” Recalling the tumultuous events of the previous day; the King observed, “Princess Soo Jin, you definitely have been through a lot lately. So it’s quite understandable for you to have forgotten about your own birthday.” After she seconded her royal husband’s observations; the Queen added, “If your royal parents, had not sent along these gifts in celebration of your birthday, no one here would have ever known that today was so special.”
Seeing that the King and Queen were motioning for them to take their seats; Prince JiangSu ushered Eun Jung forward, and observed quietly, “Soo Jin, I’ll always remember that the eighteenth day of the second month in the year is my wife’s special day. As long as we’re together; I promise that you’ll never be able to forget that today is your birthday again.” Having heard Prince JiangSu’s heartfelt words; Eun Jung smiled at him, and replied in a soft whisper, “Everyday that I’m with you is special.” Mistaking the royal couple’s idleness, to mean that they were awaiting his directives, the King quickly gave his permission for them to partake of the specially prepared meal. Obeying the King’s instructions; Prince JiangSu and Eun Jung began to eat from their small bowls of seaweed soup; while they discreetly stole glances at one another.
When they had finished their meal; the Queen called for one of her maids to bring out the gift, which she and the King had prepared for the occasion. Touched by the King and Queen’s considerate gesture; Eun Jung felt the tears well up in her eyes, and repeatedly thanked them for their kindness. As the maid handed Eun Jung her present, the King observed jokingly, “Princess Soo Jin, you should save your tears until after you’ve seen the gift.” Reaching out to wipe away Eun Jung’s tears, Prince JiangSu replied, “Please excuse my wife. She always seems to cry whenever she’s happy.” Before Eun Jung could interject into the conversation; she took note of the King’s altered disposition, and watched as he abruptly stood up from his seat.
Following Prince JiangSu’s lead; Eun Jung turned around in her seat to see who or what had gotten the King’s undivided attention. When she saw Prince Dae Hyun; Eun Jung smiled warmly to greet him, but quickly became expressionless upon seeing the tall stranger who walked beside him. Observing that the stranger shared a very strong resemblance to Prince JiangSu’s distinctly masculine jaw line; Eun Jung turned to him to ask if they were related. Having caught a glimpse of the strain contained in Prince JiangSu’s eyes; Eun Jung quickly decided against asking him about anything, and sat silently awaiting to see the events, which would transpire. When Prince Dae Hyun and his partner came within earshot; the King addressed the stranger, by exclaiming loudly, “You’ve finally come home!” With a deep bow, the stranger replied, “Yes royal father; your faithful son has returned.”
Having acknowledged their formal bows; the King hastily gave permission for both Princes to stand, and insisted that they take a seat at the table. After sitting down in the empty chair between the King and Eun Jung; the stranger turned to her, and smiled before observing, “I don’t think we’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. I’m sure I would’ve remembered such a beautiful face.” Agitated by his brother’s lack of decorum; Prince JiangSu commented dryly, “Prince Hyo, you really haven’t changed a bit since you were last here.” Taking note of Prince JiangSu’s agitation, Prince Hyo replied, “My dear brother, I believe that I can say the same about you.” Sensing the rising tension between the two men; Prince Dae Hyun quickly interjected by saying, “No one here has changed very much in the last two years. But we’re very lucky to have added the Grand Princess Consort to our family.” Re-focusing his attention back onto Eun Jung, Prince Hyo observed, “So you really are the Grand Princess Consort. Your beauty certainly precedes you, and may I add that all of the praise is well deserved.”
Unsure about how she should respond to such flattery; Eun Jung quickly looked to Prince JiangSu for guidance. Seeing the confused expression on Eun Jung’s face; Prince JiangSu turned to the King to say, “It looks like our Prince Hyo is interested in finding a wife. My dear royal father, you may want to consider setting up a royal match for him as soon as possible.” Unable to detect the hostile undertones of Prince JiangSu’s statement, the King resolutely replied, “I certainly should consider doing that. Prince Hyo is two years your elder and should be married by now.” Upon hearing his marital status being discussed; Prince Hyo quickly interjected by saying to the King, “Unless you can find a woman whose beauty rivals that of the Grand Princess Consort’s; I think I would prefer to remain unwed.” Thinking that Prince Hyo was always full of good-humor; the King observed happily, “My dear son, we surely have missed your wittiness around here.”
Being slightly more in tune with Prince JiangSu’s temperament; Eun Jung immediately sensed his growing discomfort, and took a hold of his hand beneath the table, in hopes of making him feel better. Turning around to focus her attention on Prince Hyo; Eun Jung smiled politely before saying, “I’d like to thank you for your generous compliments about my beauty. However, I don’t think that I’m very pretty. Luckily for me, Prince JiangSu was willing to marry a woman with such a plain face.” Taking Eun Jung’s cue; Prince JiangSu held on tighter to her hand, and smiled before adding, “Dear brother, my wife and I do hope that you’ll soon find that beauty with, which you seek.” Taking note of Prince Hyo’s slightly affected expression; Prince Dae Hyun tried to lighten the mood by asking, “Why isn’t anyone concerned about finding me a wife?” Pleased to see that all of his sons were getting along so well; the King observed, “It’s wonderful to have all of my favorite sons all gathered in one place.”
